The fee increase applies to the following seven provincial airports operated by Thailand’s Department of Airports:

  • Krabi (KBV) – A gateway to stunning beaches and island-hopping destinations.

  • Surat Thani (URT) – A major hub for travellers heading to Koh Samui and nearby islands.

  • Ubon Ratchathani (UBP) – A cultural hotspot in northeastern Thailand.

  • Udon Thani (UTH) – A key access point to Laos and home to the famous Red Lotus Lake.

  • Khon Kaen (KKC) – A bustling northeastern city known for its vibrant festivals.

  • Nakhon Si Thammarat (NST) – A hidden gem featuring temples and pristine beaches.

  • Phitsanulok (PHS) – A historic town near Sukhothai, Thailand’s first capital.

Updated passenger service charges

The revised Passenger Service Charges (PSC) are as follows:

  • 425 baht (S$17) for international flights (previously 400 baht (S$16))

  • 75 baht (S$3) for domestic flights (previously 50 baht (S$2))

While the increase remains relatively small, budget-conscious travellers should take note, particularly those flying internationally.

Reason for the fee increase

The fee adjustment aims to enhance the passenger experience by introducing three automated service systems designed to streamline airport operations:

  • Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) – A shared system enabling multiple airlines to utilise the same check-in counters and boarding gates.

  • Common Use Self-Service (CUSS) – Self-check-in kiosks intended to reduce long queues.

  • Common Use Bag Drop (CUBD) – A self-service baggage drop system for smoother departures.

These improvements are expected to minimise wait times, enhance efficiency, and modernise airport processes, benefiting frequent travellers.

Implementation Timeline

The fee increase will not take effect immediately. CAAT must first inspect and verify the functionality of the new systems before approving the revised charges. Once approved, the new fees will be implemented at least four months later, allowing passengers time to prepare for the adjustment.

Muslim-friendly facilities at provincial airports

Muslim travellers passing through Thailand’s provincial airports will find improved facilities catering to their needs. Several of the affected airports, including Krabi, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat, serve regions with sizable Muslim populations, ensuring better access to prayer rooms (surau), halal-certified dining options, and ablution facilities.

  • Prayer rooms: Many airports, including Krabi International Airport, have dedicated prayer rooms equipped with separate areas for men and women.

  • Halal food availability: Airports such as Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat feature halal-certified restaurants and food stalls. Travellers should look for official halal logos or inquire with the airport staff.

  • Ablution (wudu) facilities: Some airports provide dedicated spaces near prayer rooms for wudu, ensuring convenience for Muslim travellers.

With Thailand’s commitment to improving tourism infrastructure, these enhancements ensure a more comfortable experience for Muslim visitors. Travellers are encouraged to check with airport information desks for specific halal-friendly services at each location.

Closure of Thai Smile Airways

In related aviation news, the CAAT board has officially endorsed the closure of Thai Smile Airways, following its merger with Thai Airways International (THAI). As a result, Thai Smile’s short-haul routes will now be operated under the Thai Airways brand.
