Are you ready to fulfil your travel goals?
Malaysians planning to visit the United Kingdom can now rejoice, as starting 8 Jan 2025, they can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This newly introduced system simplifies short-term travel, allowing easier access to the UK without the complexities of a visa application. With this development, planning a trip to the UK has never been more convenient.

An ETA is a digital travel permission allowing visitors to enter the UK for up to six months. It serves various purposes, such as tourism, business trips, visiting family and friends, or short-term study. Introduced by the British government, the ETA aims to streamline immigration processes and enhance border security, offering travellers a more efficient and secure experience at UK entry points. Unlike a traditional visa, the ETA is entirely online and faster to obtain, catering to those who do not need a visa to enter the UK.
The ETA remains valid for two years or until the applicant’s passport expires, whichever comes first. During this validity period, travellers can make multiple entries to the UK, enabling them to explore the country over several trips. However, if the passport is renewed, a new ETA must be obtained, as the authorisation is digitally linked to the passport.

Citizens from 48 countries, including Malaysia, are eligible to apply for an ETA. By April 2025, all visitors from visa-exempt countries will require an ETA to enter the UK. Malaysians planning their travels are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the process and apply early to avoid last-minute issues.
The application fee for an ETA is £10 (approximately SGD17), making it a cost-effective solution for travellers. Compared to the time and expenses involved in obtaining a visa, this is a welcome change for Malaysians looking to explore the UK.
The application process is straightforward and takes only about 10 minutes to complete. Applicants can apply either online or via the official UK ETA app, available on the Apple Store and Google Play. To apply, individuals will need their passport (to photograph and scan the chip), a selfie, and their personal details to answer some questions. They will also need to use a credit or debit card for payment. Those applying for someone else must ensure that the person is present during the process. Refer this video for the full online application.
Applications are typically processed within three working days, though decisions may arrive sooner when using the app. Despite the quick processing time, it is advisable to apply well in advance of the intended travel date to account for any unforeseen delays.

The ETA system is part of the UK’s transition to a digital immigration system, aligning with practices in countries such as the US and Australia. This system not only strengthens border security but also ensures a more seamless entry experience for millions of visitors. According to the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, the ETA provides pre-clearance for entry; however, final approval lies with UK border control officers.
Malaysians became eligible to apply for the ETA on 27 Nov 2024, with the first travel date permitted under this scheme beginning 8 Jan 2025. This phased rollout gives travellers ample time to understand and complete the application process.

The introduction of the ETA marks a significant milestone for Malaysian travellers. Whether it’s exploring iconic landmarks in London, immersing in the beauty of the Scottish Highlands, or reconnecting with family and friends, this new system simplifies the journey. With an ETA in hand, travellers can focus on creating unforgettable memories without the stress of navigating visa procedures.
