Bangkok’s SRT Red Line Goes Pet-Friendly Only on Weekends Starting January 2025

Exciting news is arriving for pet lovers in Bangkok as the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) prepares to launch a unique initiative for 2024. Starting on 4 Jan, the SRT’s Red Line train service will introduce a pet-friendly carriage on weekends, allowing pets and their owners to travel together. This collaboration between the SRT and Nida Poll aims to provide an inclusive and enjoyable commuting experience for animal enthusiasts.

A dedicated carriage for furry companions

On weekends, passengers can look forward to a special carriage designed exclusively for pet owners and their furry companions. This dedicated space makes it possible for pets such as playful dogs or cuddly cats to join their owners on trips, enhancing the travel experience for animal lovers. Each train will include one such carriage to accommodate these unique travellers.

Guidelines to keep in mind

However, several important guidelines have been established to ensure the smooth operation of this service. The pet-friendly initiative is limited to cats and dogs, excluding other types of pets such as birds or small rodents. Each passenger is allowed to bring only one pet, which must be placed securely in a designated cage or container. These containers are subject to size restrictions, with dimensions not exceeding 55cm in width, 37cm in length, and 30cm in height. While this setup may not suit larger breeds like Great Danes, it is ideal for smaller pets like Cocker Spaniels or tabby cats.

Prioritising health and safety

Health and safety remain top priorities for the SRT. Passengers must present valid identification and vaccination certificates for their pets before boarding. This requirement ensures the health and safety of all human and animal travellers. Additionally, all pets and their owners must remain in the designated pet-friendly carriage to respect the preferences of other passengers.

Inclusivity for all travellers

Inclusivity extends beyond pet owners, as the SRT has made thoughtful efforts to ensure the service accommodates all passengers. Muslim travellers, for instance, can enjoy the new initiative with peace of mind knowing that designated pet carriages maintain a clean and organised environment. This attention to cleanliness and compartmentalisation caters to diverse cultural and religious sensitivities, ensuring a pleasant experience for everyone.

Striking a balance between comfort and practicality

The pet-friendly train service, available only on weekends, strikes a careful balance between inclusivity and practicality. By dedicating a specific carriage to pets and their owners, the SRT creates a comfortable environment for animal lovers without inconveniencing other travellers. This thoughtful arrangement is expected to delight both pet enthusiasts and those seeking a pet-free commute.

A new era for pet owners in Bangkok

For pet owners in Bangkok, this initiative represents a significant change. Beyond convenience, it opens up new opportunities for shared experiences and strengthens the bond between people and their pets. Whether planning a day at the park, a visit to a pet-friendly café, or simply enjoying a scenic train ride, the SRT’s pet-friendly service makes these activities more accessible.

Setting an example in public transportation

This service also reflects a broader shift toward inclusivity in public transportation. By accommodating pet owners, the SRT is setting an example for other cities and transit systems to follow. It demonstrates how public services can be both practical and compassionate, catering to the diverse needs of the community.

Get ready for memorable adventures

Pet owners are encouraged to prepare for this new service by readying their pet’s travel carrier and ensuring vaccination records are up to date. With the SRT’s pet-friendly Red Line trains, weekends in Bangkok promise to be filled with memorable adventures for pets and their owners. Sometimes, the journey itself becomes just as magical as the destination.
