A change in policy

Initially, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) announced on 6 Feb that the meningitis vaccine was no longer a requirement for Umrah pilgrims. However, in a more recent update, the Ministry of Health reversed that decision, citing health and safety concerns. Now, all airlines operating at Saudi airports, including private transport providers, have been instructed to enforce this rule.

Why the change?

According to the Saudi Ministry of Health, this updated requirement is part of an effort to strengthen health precautions and minimise the spread of infectious diseases. With hundreds of thousands of pilgrims expected to gather in Mecca for Umrah during Ramadan—a peak season for religious travel—the risk of disease transmission naturally increases. The ministry is taking extra steps to ensure everyone’s well-being.

Pilgrims need to receive their meningitis vaccine at least 10 days before travelling to ensure proper immunity. The good news? If someone has already received the vaccine within the past five years, they won’t need a booster shot, as the protection remains effective for that duration.

Additional health requirements

This isn't the only vaccine requirement for pilgrims. Since March 2024, Saudi authorities have also made the flu vaccine mandatory for all Umrah and Hajj travellers. Additionally, the pneumococcal vaccine is highly recommended for those over 65 and individuals with chronic illnesses.

What is Meningitis, and why is this important?

Meningitis is a serious infection that causes inflammation of the protective layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It’s usually caused by bacteria and can be life-threatening if left untreated. Given that large gatherings increase the risk of transmission, requiring the vaccine is a crucial preventive step.
