The fires started on Saturday, 8 Mar 2025, in Center Moriches, a quiet town known for its charming waterfront views. Within hours, strong winds pushed the flames eastward, threatening nearby communities like East Moriches, Eastport, and Westhampton. The dry conditions and gusts of up to 30 mph only made things worse, causing the fires to spread rapidly. By Sunday morning, the blazes had consumed over 400 acres of land.

Adding to the urgency, NASA revealed that the fire had spread across 4 square kilometres along Sunrise Highway, posing a serious risk to an Amazon warehouse, a chemical plant, and several residential areas. If the fire continues, these locations could be in imminent danger.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul responded swiftly by declaring a state of emergency for Suffolk County, a move that unlocked vital resources for the firefighting effort. Nearly 80 fire departments, 20 EMS agencies, and National Guard helicopters have been deployed to contain the blazes.

So far, three of the four major fires have been fully contained, while the largest one in Westhampton is about 80% under control. While firefighters have made incredible progress, some hot spots still pose a risk. Authorities are keeping a close eye on weather conditions in case the winds reignite the flames.

Impact on travellers and locals

Anyone planning a trip to the Hamptons or Long Island should be prepared for some disruptions. Several major roads, including parts of Sunrise Highway, have been temporarily closed to prevent further risks. The US military has evacuated or temporarily relocated some of its bases in response to the fire threat. Although no residential homes have been damaged yet, two commercial buildings have suffered fire damage.

Evacuations were carried out in some areas, but fortunately, most residents and visitors were able to safely relocate. However, travellers are encouraged to check road conditions and stay updated before heading to the region.

A look at affected areas on Long Island over the past 24 hours, according to FIRMS. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to protect homes, businesses, and natural landscapes. Sadly, two firefighters were injured while battling the flames. One suffered a second-degree burn on the face, while the other sustained a head injury. Fortunately, both have since been treated and released from the hospital.

What caused the fires?

Right now, authorities are investigating the possibility of arson. Given how quickly the fires spread, officials are looking into suspicious activity that might have contributed to the disaster. Drones are being used to survey the affected areas, and investigators are reviewing 911 calls to gather more evidence.

What happens next?

Firefighters remain on the scene, working to ensure the fires are fully extinguished and that the area remains safe. For travellers, this means being cautious when visiting nature reserves, hiking trails, or beaches near the affected zones. If you were planning to drive through eastern Long Island, be aware of potential detours and travel delays.

Local businesses are already working on reopening safely, and residents are rallying together to support those affected. If you’re visiting the Hamptons soon, consider supporting local businesses and checking in with local tourism boards for the latest updates.
