Best Places to Eat Muslim Guide to Hong Kong

Tickle your tastebuds with delicious duck rice, flavourful dim sum and slurp-worthy spicy beef noodles. Hong Kong’s dizzying array of halal food options will leave you spoilt for choice (and reeling for more). From hole-in-the-wall eateries to easy takeouts, here are our top picks:

Islamic Centre Canteen

You’ve probably heard of Islamic Centre Canteen in Wan Chai, especially through word of mouth recommendations. Located on the fifth floor of Masjid Ammar and Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre, this wallet-friendly eatery doles out delicious dim sum and a plethora of other local Cantonese delights.

Do try some of their signature dishes: BBQ Chicken Steamed Bun, Shrimp Rice Rolls and their Steamed Beef Balls. You can certainly expect a halal dim sum feast here, with over 30 types of dim sum to pick from.

Address: Masjid Ammar And Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre, 40 Salvation Army Street, Wan Chai, Hong Kong
Opening Hours: Weekdays: 11am-9pm, Weekends: 10am-9pm

Ma’s Restaurant

At Ma’s Restaurant, you can expect the best veal goulash and lamb rolls in town! The dishes here pack a flavoursome punch, especially their hearty noodle broths. Located along a quiet street, Ma’s Restaurant is a casual spot to enjoy comforting Xinjiang cuisine.

The exhaustive menu (19 pages long!) will leave you really spoilt for choice. If you’re dining in groups, you can even go for the set meals and try a larger variety of dishes. Our top recommendation? Spiced Beef Shank Noodles! The rich broth and springy noodles kept us wanting more. If you still can afford some space, indulge in the Coconut Pudding and Black Sesame Sweet Soup for dessert.

Address: 21號 Cheung Sha Wan Rd, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong
Opening Hours: Daily, 11.30am-11.30pm

Wai Kee

What’s a trip to Hong Kong without sampling good ol’ duck rice? Owned by a local Chinese Muslim, Wai Kee is the best choice for you to get your hawker-style duck rice fix. Be sure to arrive hungry because your plate will soon be loaded with crisp, roast duck! The aroma is enough to whet your appetite. To amp up the flavours, enjoy the succulent duck meat by dipping it with the sweet plum sauce.

If you’re not a fan of duck, fret not. Curry lovers can enjoy scrumptious lamb, beef or chicken options. Wai Kee’s Soy Sauce Chicken and Wanton Noodles are also super popular here. You won’t have to spend a fortune indulging in local goodness here.

Address: 23 Bowrington Rd, Bowrington, Hong Kong
Opening Hours: Daily, 11am-6pm

Chrisly Cafe – Bakery

If you’re a big fan of Hong Kong’s famous pineapple buns and other local pastries, this is one bakery you cannot skip. Tucked away on the third floor of Shun Tak Centre, Chrisly Cafe has a halal-certified bakery section. The bakery is entirely separate from the main food kitchen.

To satisfy your sweet tooth, try their pineapple buns, egg tart, “wife cake” and peanut butter biscuits. These also make for great souvenirs to take home if you’re heading to the airport soon!

Address: Shop 3018, 3/F, Shun Tak Centre, 168-200 Connaught Road Central, Hong Kong
Opening Hours: Daily, 7am-7pm

Best Places to Explore Muslim Guide to Hong Kong

Whether you’re vacationing with your significant other or as a family with the little tots, Hong Kong will entice you with world-class attractions that appeal to both the young and young at heart. You’ll have a whopping good time here exploring the vast grounds of Hong Kong Disneyland, wandering along stunning promenades and marvelling at panoramic vistas amidst the clouds. Navigate your way to oodles of fun with this round-up of top places you must visit:

Hong Kong Disneyland

Theme park aficionados, witness Mickey and his friends at the “happiest place on Earth”! At Hong Kong Disneyland, unleash the inner kid in you at perennial Disney classics such as Space Mountain and It’s A Small World After All.

Adrenaline junkies must venture to Tomorrowland and immerse in the latest thrills – Iron Man Experience and Ant-man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! If you love meeting your favourite Disney characters, don’t miss the chance to say hello to Buzz Lightyear and his friends at Toy Story Land.

#HZTip: Feeling peckish? Tuck into a wide array of cuisines at Explorer’s Club Restaurant. Treat yourself to savoury Asian favourites such as Hainanese Chicken Rice as well as Nasi Goreng in case you’re missing flavours back home. Muslim travellers will also be pleased to find a prayer room with a shared ablution area next to Explorer’s Club Restaurant.

Ocean Park Hong Kong

You can’t leave Hong Kong without visiting the country’s biggest (and oldest) amusement park – Ocean Park! An amalgamation of thrilling rides, exotic wildlife and sea-themed shows, Ocean Park offers a bustling multi-sensory experience for all to enjoy. Situated on the southern tip of Hong Kong Island, this colossal attraction can be easily accessed by the MTR.

If you’re too spoilt for choice on what to do, hop on these heart-thumping rides first: The Abyss – VR Space Voyage, The Flash and the daunting Hair Raiser. If you’d rather have a calmer start to your day, saunter around the Grand Aquarium instead and marvel at fascinating creatures from the ocean realm. Alternatively, “Meet the Sea Lions” or wave to the inimitable giant panda residents – Ying Ying and Le Le.

#HZTip: Grab a bite at Panda Café Food To Go or Café Ocean when your tummy starts to growl. You can expect delicious snacks like hotdogs and beef balls in the former, while the latter allows you to sit down and delight in tasty mains. Our top recommendation? The Penang Char Kway Teow! If you’re looking for prayer spaces, just head to the Guest Relations Office.

Avenue of Stars

Hong Kong’s answer to the “Hollywood Walk of Fame” recently reopened this year in Tsim Sha Tsui. Avenue of Stars commemorates the history of Hong Kong’s film industry along its shoreline promenade. Spot the copper-coloured handprints of distinguished Hong Kong film stars on the wooden handrails like that of Michelle Yeoh, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Chow Yun-fat and Maggie Cheung. Don’t forget to snap a photo with Bruce Lee’s bronze statue – a famous martial artist, movie star and cultural icon!

Visitors can also view film-related exhibitions, arts and cultural shows, diverse local music, dance performances and theatre shows. As you wander along the star-studded scenic promenade, soak in splendid views of Victoria Harbour and snap a selfie or two.

#HZTip: You simply must witness the iconic Hong Kong skyline when it’s spectacularly illuminated. Avenue of Stars is a popular viewing spot to catch the free 10-minute light and sound show: “A Symphony of Light” at 8pm.

Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car

Image credit: Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car

What better way to revel in unrivalled views of Hong Kong and its surrounds than by cable car? As the name suggests, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car offers you 360-degree aerial vistas of Lantau Island and is the longest bi-cable cable car in Asia!

We recommend opting for the Crystal Cabin so that you can fully immerse yourself in the enhanced bottomless experience. Soar over verdant hills, flora and fauna and the boundless South China Sea whilst enjoying the tranquility of nature. Attempt to spot the airport and landmark attractions namely Tian Tan Buddha and the Po Lin Monastery whilst enjoying the breeze from the top. Trade the skyscraper views for a different perspective of Hong Kong, while escaping from the city’s hustle and bustle.

#HZTip: Spend time exploring Ngong Ping Village, the gateway to attractions like Tai O Fishing Village. Embrace the Chinese architecture of the buildings here and dine at halal-certified Ebeneezer’s Kebabs and Pizzeria when those hunger pangs set in.

sky100 Hong Kong Observation Deck

sky100 Hong Kong Observation Deck is located on the 100th floor of the International Commerce Centre (tallest building in Hong Kong!). The skyscraper also doubles as the only indoor observation deck offering unparalleled views of the territory. From this vantage point, expect to see Hong Kong Island, Victoria Harbour, the Kowloon Peninsula and Tai Mo Shan in the distance.

This family-friendly attraction also allows you to learn about Hong Kong’s culture via fascinating multimedia exhibits. Aside from that, explore a virtual dynamic flying experience through Augmented Reality via the interactive sky100 mobile app.

Pentahotel Hong Kong, Kowloon

Whether you’re on a shoestring budget or prefer indulging in luxe five-pearl suites, Hong Kong has something that caters to every budget. You’ll find a slew of hotels and wallet-friendly hostels scattered all around. We had the privilege of staying at Pentahotel Hong Kong in Kowloon and had a very memorable stay.

Just a ten-minute walk from the Diamond Hill MTR subway station, Pentahotel Hong Kong in Kowloon East is pretty accessible. From the moment we arrived, the spacious driveway, contemporary rustic decor and unconventional hotel layout already had us riveted.

The aged brick walls juxtaposed against the concrete walls laced with Hong Kong-style graffiti created a stylish yet fun space. No doubt, there’s a seamless blend of whimsical local references and functionality in this “neighbourhood lifestyle” hotel.

As the lobby is located on the second floor, we also had the chance to marvel at the hotel’s other facilities first – the Games Room specifically! Can you imagine having multiple board games, a foosball table and even a pool table all for your use?

Although we had to stay indoors quite a bit as our stay, unfortunately, coincided with a typhoon, we were still well-occupied! Also, there were cute vending machines that enabled us to purchase instant noodles, snacks and other travel essentials without having to brave the howling winds and chilly temperatures.

While we were already squealing in delight thanks to all the lovely facilities and amenities, we were eager to see how the rooms looked like. The spacious guest rooms at Pentahotel Hong Kong are incredibly comfortable, tastefully furnished and boast warm, neutral tones.

It’ll be a bonus if you get rooms on the higher floors as the views of the vicinity, encircled by the mist-shrouded hills, are a sight to behold. We were fortunate to be on the 32nd floor so you can imagine where we were perched at every morning!

Food-wise, Muslim travellers can also delight in the fact that Pentahotel’s eatstreet@pentalounge, offers a halal menu throughout the day. From a daily halal breakfast buffet to hearty mains such as Nasi Goreng and Stir-Fried Beef Noodles, you can tuck into authentic local meals without worrying. Apart from the delicious food, the cosy ambience and quirky furnishings was a lovely added touch.
