Jeju Island has been called incredible nicknames such as the “Island of the Gods” and the  “Hawaii of Korea”. Thanks to its pristine beaches, jaw-dropping natural attractions and lush countryside, this popular vacation spot definitely lives up to its name.

Jeju City

Kickstart your vacation by learning about the cultural traditions of Jeju at the Jeju Folklore and Natural History Museum. With four exhibition halls, you can peruse through artefacts and visually walk through Jeju’s rich history.

While on a similar note, drop by the Dongmun Traditional Market. The indoor market has been around for a long time and you can find a myriad of items here including fresh fruits, fish, baked goods, clothing and souvenirs.

While in Jeju, you can’t miss out in its natural gems. One such gem is the Yongduam Rock, which is a volcanic rock formation in the shape of a dragon’s head. However, the main natural attraction of Jeju is the Hallasan National Park.

This UNESCO World Heritage site surrounds Halla-san, South Korea’s highest peak. Although you can visit the area all year round, the best time would be in April or May when the hillsides are blanketed with flowering azaleas!

1. Daewonga (대원가)

Daewonga is well-known for its seafood, especially their family-sized seafood stews! Their star dish is the Haemul Cheongbol (seafood steamboat) which features a bountiful serving of abalone, mussels and squid. Other notable menu items include Abalone Hotpot and Grilled Mackerel Fish.

2. Cheonhaecheon (천해천)

If you’re feeling especially famished, head on down to Cheonhaecheon and indulge in an all-you-can-eat buffet! Stack ‘em plates with a plethora of options such as halal-certified beef, abalone, crayfish, crabs, Korean fried chicken and tteokbokki (rice cakes).

3. Bada Punggyeong (바다풍경)

For a delightful seafood meal with beautiful views of the sea, head down to Bada Punggyeong! Known for their seafood stews, they use a gochujang (red pepper paste) base instead of the usual kimchi soup. Some of their must-try dishes include Braised Mackerel Stew and Grilled Mackerel.

Located within the premises of Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Jeju Ocean Front, Tammora is a Muslim-friendly restaurant with a separate halal menu! Some of their highly recommended menu items include Beef Bulgogi, Seaweed Fulvescens, Abalone Porridge and Dried Pollack Hot Pot.

5. Bada Janchi (바다잔치)

Bada Janchi specialises in seafood dishes and some of their dishes you simply must order are Galchi Jorim (braised cutlassfish), Grilled Mackerel and Mackerel Stew. 8. Munseom Raw Fish Restaurant (문섬횟집)

If you have always wanted to try raw fish, there’s no better place to try it at than at Munseom Raw Fish Restaurant where fishes are freshly caught at sea every day! Try different cuts of fish such as opaleyes, saw-edged perches and rock sea-breams. You’ll fall in love with the firm, chewy texture of thinly sliced raw fish.

Eastern Jeju: Gimnyeong & Seongsan

The east side of Jeju is home to some of the best natural attractions on the Island! In Gimnyeong, you can find the Manjanggul Lava Tube, which is a lava tunnel filled with a variety of interesting structures such as lava stalagmites.

Just across the road from the lava tunnel is Kimnyoung Maze Park where it is okay to get lost! The mazes consist of symbols representing the history and geography of Jeju. 

Head further east and you’ll reach Seongsan, a village closest to Udo Island. While on Jeju Island, take the opportunity to know more about the ocean and its inhabitants at Aqua Planet Jeju. Get up close to over 48,000 animals and plants at the largest aquarium in Asia!

Then head to the coastline to Seongsan Ilchulbong, a volcanic crater which rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. The best time to visit is during springtime when the peak is surrounded by a sea of yellow canola flowers.

9. Onuii Sashimi Noodle Soup (오누이회국수전복돌솥밥)

Despite “sashimi” and “noodles” in its name, Onuii Sashimi Noodle Soup is actually well-known for their Abalone Hotpot Rice. Sliced abalone is cooked in a hot stone pot with other nutritious ingredients such as pumpkin and gingko. Other notable menu items include Sashimi Rice Bowl and Grilled Abalone.

10. Bangju Halmeoni Sikdang (방주할머니 식당)

Bangju Halmeoni Sikdang well-known restaurant located at the foot of Halla-san. Locals often come for their Handmade Tofu, which is made with seawater, and Bean Noodles. They also have other nourishing menu items such as Bibimbap with Seasoned Brackens, Acorn Jelly with Vegetables and Acorn Jelly Pancake.

11. Ojo Haenyeo’s House (오조 해녀의 집)

Ojo Haenyeo’s House is famous for its wholesome homemade dishes. Their star dish is definitely the comforting Jeonbokjuk (abalone porridge) which gets its unique green colour from the innards of abalone and yellow outer meat. In the past, this porridge is often served to the king!

12. Uribong Sikdang (우리봉 식당)

Located near Seongsan Ilchulbong, Uribong Sikdang is the perfect place to fuel up after hiking. You can look forward to digging into fresh seafood, such as abalone, crab and mussels, in the delicious broth when you order one of their seafood hotpots. If you have room for more, order their Premium Salt-Grilled Hairtail Fish as well!

Western Jeju: Aewol & Hallim 

The western side of Jeju is often overlooked by tourists. If you do have a day to spare, don’t let the hidden gems on the west coast go unexplored! While in the quiet town of Aewol, drop by Aewol Gwakji Gwamul Beach.

Other than white sand and crystal-clear waters, this peaceful beach features an open-air spring water bathhouse at the end of the beach. It’s the perfect place to relax your sore muscles after a day of swimming in the ocean.

As you head further west, you’ll find yourself in the town of Hallim. The most popular place in Hallim is definitely Hyeopjae Beach. Its distinctive white sand gets its colour from crushed seashells!

Located close to the beach, no visit to Hallim is complete without dropping by Hallim Park. With different gardens, such as Palm Tree Road, Jeju Stone and Bonsai Garden, you’ll certainly get lots of unique Insta-worthy pictures from just one location! 

13. Halal Restaurant Indian Kitchen Jeju

Halal Restaurant Indian Kitchen Jeju is a restaurant that is established inside a traditional English bungalow nestled in a picturesque lawn. You can look forward to tucking into delicious food, such as Lamb Chops, Butter Chicken and Lamb Tikka, while surrounded by flowers.

14. Mulmegol (물메골)

Mulmegol is known as an “honest restaurant” that prides itself in preparing nutritious food from the fresh produce to Jeju Island. You’ll be spoilt for choice with the wide variety of vegetarian dishes offered such as Lotus Leaf Rice, Mulme Bibimbap and Perilla Seed Sujebi (hand-pulled dough soup).

Southern Jeju: Seogwipo

Less than an hours’ drive away from Jeju City is Soegwipo, the island’s second-largest town. A good place to start exploring the town is none other than Seogwipo’s iconic Saeyeon Bridge. The design of the bridge is inspired by the Tewu (Jeju’s traditional log boat) and connects Seogwipo Port and Saeseom Islet.

Just a stroll away from the bridge is the Cheonjiyeon Waterfall. Meaning “sky connected with the land”, this 22-meter tall falls is truly a sight to behold. After all that sightseeing, shop till you drop at Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market. Other than clothes and souvenirs, you can also snack on Korean delicacies such as kimbap, tteokbokki and kimchi pancakes.

Finally, wind down at Lee Joong-seop Art Museum and Culture Street, a 300-meter long street lined with galleries, cafes and restaurants. Pop in some of the shops for some Insta-worthy pictures or a coffee fix! 

15. Chunshimine (춘심이네)

Chunsimine’s most famous dish on the menu is definitely their Hairtail Fish. Although this dish will set you back about KRW78,000 (~SGD88.80), it is still highly recommended by reviewers! This exquisite fish melts in your mouth and is delicious over a spoon of rice. They also serve Grilled Mackerel for a more budget-friendly alternative.
